Hi Chris,

Just wanted to say a big thank you for this and all of your videos: they're truly inspiring. I've started making my own gyroscope from your plans, albeit with a few changes to get them into real metric units (for example a 5 mm shaft instead of 4.76 mm as I don't have any imperial reamers and changing dimensions like 53.98 mm into 54 mm as I couldn't see any reason not to). Just got the flywheel left to make and I'm really looking forward to seeing it spin!

I'm extremely jealous of your tools, your skills and your ability to keep your workshop looking so clean and tidy!

Thanks again and keep making these great videos.

My son and I just finished building this from your plans. We had to take a few liberties. The local business I go to for metal didn't have any sufficiently large brass round. They did have a chunk of 3/4" thick copper plate, however. It looks great, but I forgot what a pain in the a$$ copper is to machine.

We also used sections of a 0.25" brass bolt as the top and bottom bearings (we made the outer ring 3/8" thick rather than 1/4"). Both top and bottom are adjustable.

The first time we spun it up (using a Dremel with a rubber disk mounted in it) it was actually a little scary. About a pound of copper at a thousand RPM or so feels a little intimidating...

In any case, thanks for a great project!

Terrific to hear that the build went well - I know what you mean about it being a bit scary at max rpm - it definitely requires full attention!!

Another one I did for Make: is also a great project. It has some interesting underlying physics, and you get a useful little camping tool out of it too:
