This video was done as a one-off viewer request but I like the format so I'm going to keep it going as a request driven series. Let me know in the YT comments if there is anything you want to see covered.

Cheers :)

What coarseness of file do you recommend for various materials (brass, steel, aluminum)?

Chris... I started following your videos back when the clock was center stage and have enjoyed them all. This latest one does not disappoint. I modified a few of my files like you recommend, and it really makes a difference. Thanks.

By the way... what's the latest on the Antikithera Mechanism? We're all waiting on pins and needles for episode 6.

Thanks for the good work.

One of my favourite accessories when filing is the permanent marker pen:

I use a it to coat the safe edge of the file with so I don't try to file with it by mistake - it takes forever if you try filing using the safe edge.

I also use marker on the surface being filed. It shows up if I am filing square, any marks in the surface and it indicates high points when fitting so I know which bit still needs to be filed.

Would it make any sense to use ball bearings as circular file guides? They could roll with the file being drawn instead of damaging the file.
