Antikythera Fragments #5 & #6 - Ancient Drilling Technology

2/27/2018

The precision of the holes in the Antikythera mechanism is one of the most fascinating aspects of its construction. In these 2 videos I make a tool that is capable of creating holes to the required standard, yet is consistent with the level of technology known to have existed in the period.

Cheers,
Chris.

If I may make a suggestion as to future videos, I am new to lathe work, I got my first lathe a few months ago but have not really been using it, mostly cleaning it (it's an old, small swedish lathe from the 50s) and acquiring supplies.

Supplies such as HSS tool steel. I would like to know what tool shapes and grinds you use, for what materials and what types of cuts you do with them. I think it would be very interesting and useful video for beginners. What tools are most useful in day to day work.

Hi Dennis
My first lathe was a Blomqvist BSA600 "Slitvargen". Very similar to Southbend or Boxford. I sold it many years ago (: .
Don't know where you live, but I have found much useful at ZuJeddeloh.de and Ebay.de HSS bits in China (AliExpress) are cheap, I haven't tried them yet. Use Norton 38A grade for grinding and CBN for finishing,
If your lathe happens to be Blomqvist, Åsbrink, or Storebro and you can Swedish following link might be interesting http://www.jebergstrom.se/index.php/produkter/blomqvistsvarven

Mauri
Sorry for my bad English
