Machining A Replacement Pulley With A Keyway

6/4/2015

The drive pulley on my Delta 1" Belt Sander fractured recently, so in this video I machine a replacement. This is a perfect mini lathe project, with some interesting turning between centers, as well as the formation of a keyway using the lathe as a manual shaper.

Be sure to watch the companion video "Making, Hardening and Tempering A Keyway Cutter For The Lathe".

Hi Chris,....this is nice 'elegant' machining,....many amateurs would have simply stuck the piece in the three jaw to turn the boss and then used the boss to hold while forming the groove, and keeping fingers crossed that it did'nt fly across the workshop,...So, a very nice object lesson in how to make and use mandrels.

Dear Chris,
Beautiful work as always.
That broaching process must have taken hours to do without an arbor press or a multi-tooth broach.
3 passes each at 0.5 thou for 0.125" is 750 passes!
Regards,
Nicholas Lee

Hey Nicholas,

Yes it wasn't the fastest way to get the job done! Although once I got into a rhythm, it zipped along quite nicely. As I recall it took about an hour. Thanks for watching mate.

Cheers,
Chris.

What is the fiber that you use for heat-treating, that is flame-resistant?

Do you have somewhere a list of the various supplementary materials that you use in your shop?

Thank you for these wonderful instructional videos!!

Hey Jorge,

The fiber is called Kaowool, you can find on Ebay. No list, but I usually mention most items when used in the videos.

Cheers,
Chris.
