How To Make A Clock Part 10 - Making A Bezel For The Chapter Ring

7/13/2015

The chapter ring gets a little extra bling in this episode, with the addition of an ornamental bezel.

Plenty of lathe and milling operations in this video, as well as some of my favourite activity at the moment: hand turning with a graver.

Hi Chris,...this is seriously nice machining which is better than anything that is being made at EFHC at the moment.... When you did the ornamental milling on the outside bezel how did you work out that the grooves would turn out exactly spaced where you finished?.......Did you make a specimen groove to measure it first and then divide using the rotary table?....if so then very nicely done! The slightest defect on that kind of machining spoils the entire affect......So, a bit more info please!

Hi Bob,
I did a bit of maths to get a rough idea, and then a bit of testing to see what would work. 108 increments for a 38mm cutter radius gave something nice, so I went for that. There were many other combinations that worked too. I was basically chasing a poor mans guilloche look! Very pleased with how it turned out. I can tell you I was holding my breath there trying not to make any absent minded mistakes with the indexing! Cheers mate, Chris.

Correction: ... 38mm cutter diameter (19mm radius)
