Sometimes you simply cannot buy the tool you need for the job, and must make it yourself. This shop made reamer is a perfect example.

Love these videos. Question about your reamer. How is this style of reamer different from a shop-made D-shaped reamer? Is it better for very small precision holes?

Hi Sonny,

I think it is basically a variation on the same theme really. D reamers are excellent at holding position in the hole too, both small and large. I have used them a lot, and find they work excellently. In fact the Seitz jewelling tool used by watchmakers is basically a set of miniature D reamers, and is phenomenally accurate.

A further variation on what I presented in this video is to simply form one facet, which is a cross between both ideas - it works excellently too.

The benefit of the 3 facets is that there are more cutting surfaces, so the tool needs clearing just that little bit less. I think it also leaves a slightly better finish, but all 3 ideas will work.
